Relieving Back Pain Without Pain Medication

by Bilel Nissen

If you have had a back injury, you may feel pain for quite some time afterward. This is because you use your back muscles for all types of movement throughout the day. If you aren't able to move without feeling pain, you can try a few different things to alleviate your back pain. Read on for tips to relieve back pain without harsh pain medicine.

Visit The Chiropractor

Make an appointment with a chiropractor to help with your back pain. The chiropractor can offer spinal manipulation and massage to help with the pain. The chiropractor will also show you stretches and exercises you can do at home to help with the pain. Your chiropractor will schedule you to come in for appointments as needed depending on the severity of your condition. The chiropractor can also help to show you what to do when sleeping or doing other things to prevent further back pain or injury.

Do Exercises At Home

Do exercises and stretches at home as instructed by your chiropractor or physician. If you feel any extra pain, discontinue those exercises. You have to understand and know your body and what all it can handle. Don't overdo it thinking that it will make you better faster. It will only do the opposite, causing injury to you and hindering your recovery.

Change Your Mattress

If you have an old or outdated mattress, it may cause further injury or irritation to your back. Update your mattress and add body pillows for extra support. Your mattress should support your entire body, especially the heavier parts of your body such as your shoulders, back, and buttocks. If your mattress doesn't do these things, you should update to a new one. Talk to your chiropractor about which mattresses are best and what pillows are best as well. Also talk to your chiropractor about the best way to sleep at night. Sleeping on your stomach is a no-no. You should sleep on your side with your spine in complete alignment or on your back.

Take It Easy

You need to take it easy for a while until your back is healed. This may mean you should stop doing certain activities until you are healed, even changing your position at work until you can move freely without pain. Talk to your employer about adjusting your position until your back heels or changing jobs altogether. Doing too much too soon can reinjure your back.

If you have a back injury, you're going to need to do a few different things to alleviate the pain. Pain medication may help but will only mask the pain for a limited time. Talk to your chiropractor about other things you can do to alleviate your back pain.
