How A Chiropractor Can Treat A Gardener's Back Pain By Repositioning The Sacral Bone

by Bilel Nissen

Getting a garden back in shape during the spring can create a lot of pleasure for many people, but bending over for hours at a time can also bring a lot of back pain. A gardener spends a lot of time digging with shovels, lifting and moving heavy rock and plants, and leaning over and stretching while pruning trees and bushes. This type of activity can cause the sacral bone in the lower back to flex out of position. The sacral bone is the big bone at the base of the spine that serves as the center of the pelvis. You will feel pain once the sacral bone is displaced. If the pain gets too bad and you don't want to take strong pain medication that makes you feel drowsy, you should go a chiropractor to get help. Here is what you should expect during your visit to a chiropractor who will realign the sacral bone in your lower spine to make your back feel better.

Locate Sore Muscles

The chiropractor will first try to isolate the sore lower back muscles. They will have you lie flat on an examining table and ask you to lift one of your legs up straight. The chiropractor will push down on the leg near your foot. If you can keep your leg up, the back muscles on that side of the body are strong and in good shape, but if the chiropractor can push the leg down easily, that shows that the back muscles connected to that leg are sore and damaged. The problem is that the sacral bone has shifted out of position on the side of the body with the weak leg.  When the bone gets displaced, the neurological function of the muscles going to a leg is interrupted. This is what causes the weakening of the leg. The chiropractor will push the sacral bone back into place to relieve some of the pain.

 Pushing Technique

The chiropractor will have you roll onto your side with the strong leg. The weak leg is placed on top of the strong leg and is bent up until the ankle is just above the knee on the strong leg. The chiropractor will push up on the sacral bone and the muscles going to the sacral bone. The purpose of the technique is to push the sacral bone back into its proper position. You should feel immediate relief once the sacral bone is pushed back in place.

Re-Test Leg

The chiropractor will have you lie flat on your back again and make you raise the weak leg. The chiropractor will push down on the leg again. This time, you should be able to hold your leg up against the pressure of the chiropractor pushing down. This shows that the neurological function of the leg has been restored and you can go back to fixing up your garden. Just take it a little easier this time around.
