Three Ways To Spend The Hours After Your Chiropractic Adjustment

by Bilel Nissen

Although you might visit the doctor or dentist during a quick break in your workday and then jump right back into the flow of things, the same approach isn't ideal for chiropractic care. Given the major physical changes that can occur in your body during a chiropractic adjustment, it's valuable to follow a specific aftercare routine in the hours after you leave your appointment. Taking proper care of yourself promotes the healing process and prevents the risk of your actions undoing some of changes implemented by the chiropractor. Although your health practitioner will always give you specific aftercare instructions, these three strategies are useful to adopt.

Keep Your Body Properly Hydrated

The intense physical change that your body experiences during a chiropractic adjustment can leave your body somewhat sore. Consistently sipping water after you leave the chiropractor's office can help to rehydrate sore muscles and even aid in your body's ability to flush out toxins that were released during the appointment. It's a smart idea to keep a bottle or larger container of water with you so you'll have hydration as soon as you leave your appointment. Continue drinking water in the hours that follow; you'll likely visit the washroom more than usual, but this process is integral to helping your body get rid of toxins.

Find Something That Relaxes You

Stress can cause muscle pain and other physical issues that may interfere with the change you just went through at the chiropractor's office. Try to avoid stressful activities -- schedule your appointment away from rush hour and don't have any urgent things scheduled right after your session. Instead, work on finding an activity that is relaxing. Depending on the location of the chiropractor's office, this activity could be a walk through a nearby botanical garden or park, some laid-back window shopping or just a short rest on a park bench.

Don't Fight Your Body's Urge To Rest

Chiropractic patients commonly feel tired after their adjustments, especially the adjustments at the start of the treatment plan. Don't fight the urge to rest by pushing yourself. Instead, make resting and self-care a priority. Return home, unplug your phone and turn off your electronic devices and enjoy a nap or, if you're not a napper, simply some quiet time in bed or on the couch. Wherever you choose to rest, focus on doing so in a comfortable position to avoid undoing the benefits of the chiropractic adjustment.
